Window Greenhouse

In a week or so we are going to have several old farmhouse style windows sitting on our back patio, just begging to be put to some use, somewhere. Our seventy-year-old home is finally going to get the windows replaced. After the scary heating bills I was saddled with last winter, we are taking some measures to hack those bills down to something that doesn't turn the hair at my temples white! So, the plan is to have a pellet stove installed in Mom's apartment, and replacing all the drafty windows on both our sides (you could actually feel a breeze standing within a few feet of each window!). With the old windows out, the mister and I have been talking about what to do with all those antique panes of glass.

We have both been struck with the idea of a greenhouse for plant starts for the garden next year. Here are some of our favorite options.

The last one is actually a chicken coop (which would be fun, too...), but it could be transformed into a lovely little greenhouse.

Having never used a greenhouse before, do any of you have advice either way? Will it just be a pretty lawn ornament? Do you see value in a greenhouse in our Washington climate? It would allow me to plant seeds earlier, I think, which would be beneficial since the groaning season here seems short and temperamental (like my youngest daughter). Of course, I do like pretty lawn ornaments, so we may just do it either way.

  1. The bottom one looks like it COULD be made into a combo chicken coop/greenhouse. How cool would THAT be????

The really old couple down the street had one that looked like the top one - made of old windows. I noticed a few years ago he had stopped using it, then I think they gave the house to the son. I always meant to go say, "If at some point you want to get rid of that greenhouse..." but I didn't and now it has disappeared! I want one too Lydia:)

  3. Lydia,

Green houses are a lot of work but beautiful. You could start with the cold boxes (option two), and see how well that goes...?

If there is an extra smaller cute old window, can I buy it from you?
